The paper provides a summary on 72 living algal collections, most of which are registered in the World Federation of Culture Collections (WFCC), the European Culture Collection Organisation (ECCO), or in the World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WDCM). The Collections are briefly described and represented in alphabetical order according to their distribution in Asia (17), Australia (2), Europe (41), North (11) and South America (5).
