Parent effectiveness training by dr. Thomas Gordon’s method – conceptual and practical aspects

Abstract

The growing crisis in the morality and education of modern society reasonably determines in recent years the increased interest of pedagogy and psychology in the potential of the family and the development of its competences related to the upbringing and education of children. This publication introduces the Successful Parent Training method known worldwide as P.E.T. (Parent Effectiveness Training), of the American psychologist Thomas Gordon, as an alternative to increase the pedagogical culture of parents in an informal environment. Dr. Gor- don‘s system for working with children of all ages is laid out by tracing the steps parents must go through to raise „mature, healthy and happy individuals“. Emphasis is placed on active listen- ing, self-messages, communication avoidance skills, and parent-child conflict resolution, or the so-called „no-lose method,“ as the core of the model‘s philosophy and key to parenting success.
