Abstract

The purpose of Directive (EU) 2016/800 of the European parliament and of the Council of 11 May 2016 on procedural safeguards for children who are suspects or accused persons in criminal proceedings is to establish procedural safeguards to ensure that children, meaning persons under the age of 18, who are suspects or accused persons in criminal proceedings, are able to understand and follow those proceedings and to exercise their right to a fair trial, and to prevent children from re-offending and foster their social integration. A focus on the analysis of this article is the achievements of the Bulgarian legislation and the case law and their compliance with Directive (EU) 2016/800 and the international standards of justice, consistent with the highер interests of juveniles accused of committing a crime.
