Abstract

The article aims to introduce the capabilities of Open Journal Systems as an electronic publishing system for scientific periodicals. The software – installation, setup and practical application in a real operating environment is studied by the students at the “Library and Information Sciences” and “Public Information Systems” bachelor’s degree programs of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. An essential part of the educational process are the role-playing games – author, editor, reviewer, proofreader, etc. The practical aim is to publish an issue of an experimental scientific periodical. The capabilities of Open Journal Systems in the process from submission of a draft article through editorial processing, review and publication are presented. The main features of the system are considered, including working in Bulgarian and English language. Particular attention is paid to the bibliographic information and metadata (authors, institutions, keywords, abstract of a scientific article and references) which are mandatory for this academic genre.
