Depression and social functioning in older adults – users of social services

The current paper presents an empirical study of the relationships between measured levels of depression and a group of variables related to social functioning of older users of social services. In the measurement and analysis are included: social adaptation; social activity; quality of life satisfaction; frequency of hobbies and recreations practicing; depression; loneliness; age; education; health; cognitive and material living status. The results of the correlation analysis indicate that the depression is significantly and inversely correlated with the large part of the indicators of satisfaction and complete social functioning. The factor analysis defi nes three factors that are able to stabilizing and neutralizing action on depression in the elderly. These are: (1) biopsychosocial stability, emotional satisfaction and security; (2) intellectual, spiritual and creative oriented consciousness and activity of the individual; (3) self-management, independence, provision and satisfaction of basic needs in everyday life. The results of the research can serve in practice for development of programs for individual and group work with older users of social services.
