From adult education and training to andragogy

Abstract

The study draws attention to the main moments in the development of andragogy in Bulgaria. It is impossible in one study to present a complete picture of the establishment of a scientific field as a theory and its role in explaining and supporting practice. Therefore, the aim of the authors is to present the main moments of the history of andragogy in our country, related to its study as a university discipline and making andragogical training as an important part of the education and training of specialists working in the field of adult education. In the separate parts of the studies, through the analysis of scientific publications, curricula and programs, an answer to the following research questions is sought: What are the parameters of adult education in Bulgaria in the context of the possibilities of formal and non-formal education? What are some of the most important moments in the development of andragogy as a science and as a university discipline? To what extent do research interest and teaching content follow the needs of practice? What andragogical education is needed for professionals who organise educational activities or teaching adult learners? Based on the analysis, the authors reach specific conclusions and generalizations.
