Abstract

The intellectual climate of the period fostered the rapid dissemination of new discoveries and ideas. The development of astronomy and the emergence of new cosmological concepts gave rise to unprecedented perspectives on space, motion, matter, and the universe. In the second half of the sixteenth century, the art of painting was confronted with new aesthetic challenges, as pictorial space became increasingly dynamic.

The study draws a parallel between the cosmology of Francesco Patrizi (1529–1597) and the paintings of Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto (1518–1594), one of the most eminent figures of the Venetian Cinquecento. It addresses several key issues of Late Renaissance thought, including the philosophical and artistic problems of light and time, of motion and transformation.
