Тhе end of the Second World War changed the balance of the powers in the world in favour of socialism, which directed the policy of the U.S.А. to the liquidation of the revolution in the popular democratic countries and the removal of the communist and the other democratic forces from the government of the West European countries, including ltaly. Тhе principal political aim of the American government circles became the elimination of the leftist forces from the Italian Govemment and the political commitment of the state with American imperialism.
Тhе period from the 2nd of June, 1946 to the 30th of Мау, 1947 was the time when the joint actions of the U. S. А. and the ltalian Christian-Democratic Party, directed against the lefturing forces in Italy, took an operative character. In January 1947 Prime Мinister, Alcide de Gasperi, undertook his "historical" visit in the United States where he received economic and, above all, political support to liquidate the policy of national unity in ltaly.
Тhus was realized the fateful "American choice" of Italy, involving the country in the global strategy of the cold war of Washington.
