Abstract

The article represents an initial attempt at a comprehensive study of the characteristic and distinctive features of the slave system of Eshnunna, based on the extant cuneiform laws. A systematic analysis is undertaken of the paragraphs that address various aspects of the slave system and slave relations. The cited texts are translated into Bulgarian for the first time by the author. In conclusion, particular emphasis is placed on those specific elements of the slave system to which the ancient legislator devoted special attention. These very aspects serve to characterise both the nature of slavery in Eshnunna and the range of peculiarities marking the development of slavery in Mesopotamia at the end of the third and the beginning of the second millennium B.C.
