The Actual Historical Personality in Legends and in Epic Works — Processes of Mythologization

An analysis is made in the paper of haydouk legends and haydouk epic songs from the period of the Bulgarian National Revival, with the aim of demonstratingthe ’’secondary", ’’tertiary“, etc. myth in the legends and songs created on the basis of historical facts. The stages through which the historical event passes in the folkloric consciousness, namely folklorization, Christianization and mythologization, are traced. The evidence for determining the different stages is adduced by differentiating the principal folkloric oppositions: own/alien, real/sacral, good/evil. The problems of folkloric space and folkloric time are also examined in relation to the processes of demythologization and remythologization. The main evidence consists of the legends and epic cycles about Indzhe voyvoda. A comparison between the documentary sources and the folkloric material (legends, songs, modern recordings) leads to the conclusion about the existence of a strong mythical layer in the consciousness of man both from the national Revival period
and in our times.
