Professor Lyudmil Getov is among those rare individuals who embody
the scholar, the leader, and the man of integrity in equal measure. Throughout his long career – as Head of the Department of Archaeology (1976 – 1993) and Dean of the Faculty of History at Sofia University (1983 – 1984; 1989 – 1993) – he has exemplified wisdom, moderation, and respect for others, the qualities the ancient Greeks called sōphrosynē. As a teacher, he remains a captivating lecturer, a patient mentor, and an inspiring example to generations of archaeologists and historians. His students remember him as the attentive guide who would gently ask, “Well, aren’t you going to write it after all?” His research on Thracian burial practices and the amphora stamps from Kabile demonstrates both scholarly precision and intellectual breadth. His calm demeanor, kindness, and moral integrity remain his most enduring legacy.
