Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it offered to another journal for publication.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it offered to another journal for publication.
  • The submission file is in LibreOffice (.odt), Microsoft Word (.docx), or Rich Text Format (.rtf) document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided. URLs may be shortened with a link shortener service.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs bold and italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

These Guidelines have been developed in accordance with the Annual's desire to present the published texts to the maximum extent in international scientometric bases. The guidelines have been prepared in accordance with ISO 690:2021(E), Information and documentation — Guidelines for bibliographic references and citations to information resources.

GSU-IF considers only manuscripts submitted exclusively to it. By submitting a manuscript to the Annual, the author expressly declares that the text has not been published, or submitted for publication in another journal. By submitting a manuscript, the author agrees to comply with the requirements and ethical principles set forth in the Ethical codex of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". Violation of said principles will be considered as a refusal of future cooperation between the author and the Annual.

Articles and studies with original ideas, developments and new facts are published, as well as discussions, short scientific reports, reviews in Bulgarian or in English language. Detailed presentation in the text of commonly known theoretical propositions, concepts or definitions freely available from other sources is not encouraged. Citing literature not relevant to the proposed text, listing literature not used in the text, or self-citations are not encouraged also. A submitted manuscript that does not correspond to the theme of the Annual, or is not formatted according to the Guidelines, is rejected without going through an anonymous review procedure.

Submitted manuscripts are checked for originality through StrikePlagiarism. The Annual reserves the right not to publish a text for which a degree of similarity exceeding 20% ​​has been established.

The author is obliged to have a personal profile in ORCID and is encouraged to have other ones (in Researcher ID/WoS, Scopus, etc.) through which to present his work and texts to the international academic community. The personal ID number is indicated on the article's title page.

A decision to publish or reject the manuscript is made based on the opinions of anonymous and independent reviewers. The manuscript is considered accepted for publication if the author has received a confirmation message within six months from the date of its submission. In the absence of confirmation for publication, the author has the right to request the withdrawal of his text in writing. GSU-IF makes no explicit commitment to inform an author whose manuscript has been rejected.

After confirming the originality of the  manuscript through StrikePlagiarism and double-blind peer review, after editing and, if necessary, corrections made by the copyeditor at the Faculty of History, the Annual is submitted to the University Publishing House "St. Kliment Ohridski".

Guidelines for formatting and publishing the manuscript

The articles and studies are accepted and approved for publication according to the order defined in the "RULES for acceptance and printing of manuscripts in the Annual of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", adopted by the Academic Council of the Sofia University "St. Kliment. Ohridski" on December 19, 2018 (Protocol No. 5/19.12.2018), as well as in accordance with the decisions of the Editorial board of the Annual for each new issue.

A standard word processing program such as Microsoft Word and LibreOffice is used to format the manuscript. The applications - graphs, tables, illustrations, etc. must be suitable for processing with the aforementioned software. Only manuscripts in .docx and .odt format are accepted. The .rtf format is also accepted. The recommended typography is Times New Roman, 12 point. Any text in a different font is highlighted. Please use only the simplest formatting - italic, bold, font size, no special styles and tabs. The accepted units of measurement of the SI system in the Latin alphabet should be used everywhere.

Figures, illustrations and tables are presented separately from the text, and the author notes their places in the file. It is recommended that they be submitted in JPG format, in print quality.

The title page includes the title and both names of the author(s), his/her work address/institutional address/ and work e-mail. The author also provides his/hers ORCID. The author should provide a summary in Bulgarian and English. The abstract should also include five to seven keywords, in Bulgarian and English. If the author doesn't know Bulgarian language, the section editor will translate the abstract and all other applicable information.

The structuring of the article should preferably be in the following order: introduction, research methods, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgments /if any/, references.

The bibliography shall include sources on the subject, arranged in alphabetical order, without further spacing, and must comply with standard bibliographic requirements and abbreviations. If the article is in English, Latin script sources are listed first, followed by those in Cyrillic and other alphabets. A TRANSLITERATE Latin version is also added for all sources not in Latin alphabet.

Cited authors and works, as well as other comments on the text, are marked with numerical indices with continuous numbering for the entire article, with a footnote on the corresponding page. The index in the text is always written before the characters period, comma, semicolon, colon, dash and after the characters question mark, exclamation mark, quotation marks.

The bibliographic description of the cited sources follows the standard used so far in the IF Yearbook, updated according to the international standard BDS ISO 690:2021.

Articles and Studies

This section publishes articles and studies with original ideas, developments and new facts, as well as discussions, short scientific reports, reviews in Bulgarian or in English. The topic can cover different periods of the history of the world, of Bulgaria and the Balkans, as well as various types of problems from social, political and cultural history. The materials can be devoted to various questions from archival studies, cultural anthropology, archaeology, unresolved cases in border research fields between history and ethnology, history and geography, philosophy, linguistics, history and museum work, documentary studies, etc. Methodological developments related to new teaching methods in history, ethnology, archeology, museology are accepted.

Debuting

The Editorial Board of GSU-IF encourages the submission of papers by young researchers, mainly PhD students and postdocs, studying at the Faculty of History, with proven innovative theses and ideas, who have passed the peer-review process. It is possible that the materials are part of a doctoral dissertation in preparation or defense.

Reviews

The journal accepts reviews of published academic books and papers, concerning the fields of History, Ethnology and Cultural anthropology, Archaeology, Archival and documentary studies, Methodology of History Education. Reviews on materials published no earlier than 2020 are encouraged. Reviews may also be in Bulgarian or English, subject to the requirements for publication layout.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party. The Privacy policy of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" applies.
