The study is the first of its kind to attempt at а more comprehensive study of the cult of Artemis in the westem cities of Ponth on the basis of familiar direct and indirect sources. Тhе interpretation of the cult is organically related to ist manifestations io the metropolises and the leading polises, such as Athens, as well as to the peculiarities in the historical development of the cult of the Goddess in Greece, as а whole. Тhе study reveals the iconographic and ideological similarity between the cult in the colonies along the present-day Bulgarian coast and that in the metropolises of lonia and Doria; some facts suggest even а direct cultural and religious influence of Athens. Artemis manifested herself most often as Phosphoros, inextricaЫy bound up with Hecate - an expression of а рагt of her essence, and in Messambria emerged also as Soteira, merging herself with lsis in the Hellenistic epoch. Behind the multilateral image of Artemis the features of the ancient Great Goddes show through - Мistress of Life and Death, the Мооп Goddess, patroness of marine activities.
