Continuity or Change. Aspects of the Discussion on the Problems of Ideological Continuity Between Antiquity and the Middle Ages in Contemporary Western European Byzantine Studies.

The article provides a brief critical analysis of the opinions of some well-known Western European Byzantinists on the problems of the ancient ideological heritage in Byzantine culture. It examines two conditionally named "opposing" groups of opinions, whose authors present as decisive ideological continuity or changes in the thinking of Byzantine society. However, the author of the article believes that the decisive role in Byzantine cultural development belongs not only to ideological continuity or changes in conditions and thinking: in order to understand this, an objective, historically accurate picture of Byzantine reality is necessary, examining the relationship between the two trends in the ideological panorama of the empire.
