The study examines the impact of the Austro-Turkish wars on the Principality of Saxony during the 15th-17th centuries in political, economic, and socio-cultural aspects. The study is based on materials from the archives of Saxony.
A comprehensive analysis highlights the significance of the Turkish threat for the military and political development of the entire German Empire and its territories. The study also analyzes the effects of these wars on the internal development of the Principality of Saxony – their influence on the legal and administrative system, as well as on the consolidation of its territorial organization, including class and social conflicts in Saxony. Additionally, it explores the role of these wars in the confessional and imperial policies of the Saxon princes.
The social and public response was the most significant aspect of the impact of the Turkish wars on Saxony, especially after the Battle of Vienna in 1683. This response is presented in a broad societal context – from confrontation with the Ottoman presence to its acceptance in various aspects of life, including economic, cultural, and political spheres. The Turkish threat can also be identified as one of the key factors shaping and driving the main internal development processes in Saxony during this period.
