The introduction to Bogdan Sultov’s dissertation outlines the aims, methodology, and scope of the archaeological study devoted to the ancient ceramic production centres in the region of Nicopolis ad Istrum. The author defines the chronological framework from the 1st to the 4th century AD and identifies the major centres of ceramic manufacture—Hotnitsa, Pavlikeni, Butovo, and Kalvaka. The text discusses previous research, fieldwork history, and methodological approaches in excavation and typological classification. Special attention is given to technological processes, kiln construction, and the organisation of production.
