Research on the Bronze Age in Thrace I. Comparative Stratigraphy of Early Bronze Age Settlement Mounds in Southeastern Bulgaria

The article is conserned with the almost unexplored problem of the EBA in Thrace. The comparative stratigraphy of the tells and the synchronization of their levels is based on datable finds and mainly on the pottery and ils pattern. The study is based on data from the tells Ezero, Nova Zagora, Djadovo, Karanovo, Veselinovo, and Sv. Kirilovo. The synchronization proposed here is in the frames of the three stages of the EBA in Thrace Ezero A, Michalich and Sv. Kirilovo. The three-partical division itself is supported by the stratigraphical sequence and the ceramics of the investigated sites. From this point of view, the so-called "Nova Zagora MBA Culture" fits almost entirely in the last EBA stage Sv. Kirilovo. There is an attempt, on the base of the supposed synchronization, to find the rigth place of the stages Michalich and Sv. Kirilovo in the cultural development in Anatolia and the Aegean region. According to the evidance from Thrace, and the surroundings available, it seems acceptable to set Michalich and Sv. Kirilovo-stages in the time of EBA 2 end EBA 3. Another proof is the presence of imports of South origine in the EBA in Thrace. The data available is not sufficient to clear the problem of the transition to the MBA, due to later destruction on the investigated sites.
