The Gifts in the Diplomacy of the Medieval Bulgarians

The study of diplomatic practice in the Middle Ages shows that it gave a significant place to a strictly defined ceremonial and certain forms of conduct that had to be observed by the negotiators. For the most part, they were traditional and unwritten rules of conduct, the origins of which can be traced to the beginning of human civilization. Not least among these rules was one important element - the exchange of gifts. Gift exchange. Sources, mostly of Byzantine and Western origin, show that the exchange of gifts became an integral part of Bulgarian diplomacy. Diplomacy of Bulgarian khans and kings. It becomes clear that the exchange of gifts was not just a traditional ritual handed down for centuries, but a necessary pragmatism to fulfill certain goals. Gift-giving as an element of diplomatic ceremonial also had its psychological dimensions. A gift could make a partner feel respected and valued or, conversely, ignored and humiliated.
