Zhelyazko Stoyanov’s article “On the Nature of Historical-Theoretical Knowledge” examines the essence, structure, and functions of historical theory and its place within the system of scientific knowledge. The author investigates whether history can be regarded as a genuine, evolving science or merely as an empirical or applied discipline. He analyses three main perspectives—the autonomy of history, its empirical nature, and its theoretical dependency on philosophy and sociology. The study explores the role of ontological schemes and auxiliary historical disciplines in the creation and operation of historical theories. Drawing on examples from Toynbee’s philosophy of history, Paul Colinvaux’s biological theory, and the quantitative historiography (“cliometrics”), Stoyanov argues that history possesses its own theoretical and methodological framework, which cannot be reduced to either empiricism or sociological borrowing. The article advocates for the development of a coherent theoretical foundation in historiography that integrates empirical evidence with logical and mathematical modeling.
