One Glance at the Magic Called "Chinese Silk"

For thousands of years Ancient China was the only place in the world possessing and keeping the secret of silk production. The inhabltants of the country mastered the art of creating different variations of silk cloth, garments and accessories of unique splendour and elegance. The present article examines the phenomenon „Chinese silk", using archaeological and epigraphic data to Iook into the problems of its appearance, its place in the hierarchy of ancient material values and its importance in the consciousness of the Chinese people. The author discusses also the ancient myths and Iegends treating subjects related to the mulberry tree, to the silk worm or 10 the various divinities associated with them.
