Abstract

The present article is an attempt to investigate the reactions of British public opinion toward one of the most important moments of the unification of Germany – the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. The research is based on a large amount of documents and materials from the contemporary British press and public meetings. The author analyses the largest variety of political newspapers (The Times, Examiner, Morning Post, Evening Mail, Globe, Illustrated London News, Punch, Manchester Guardian, Spectator, and others) in order to represent the different orientations in British political life – from conservative to radical ones. The study compares official and unofficial documents to reveal the motivational basis of British foreign policy.
