The Legalization of the Communist Party of Spain (1976-1977)

The study examines the main issues concerning the activities of the Communist Party of Spain during one of the most important stages of its modern development – from November 1975 (the death of Franco) to June 1977 (the first free parliamentary elections). Overcoming a number of objective obstacles, during this period, the party managed to secure its right to legal existence in Spanish society. However, to achieve this, it was forced to make systematic and sometimes costly concessions, which affected its further development under the conditions of a parliamentary regime. The study is part of a larger research project dedicated to the Communist Party of Spain during the transition from Francoism to bourgeois democracy, based on unpublished materials from the archives of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Spain.
