France and the Export of Wool From Bulgarian Lands in the 18th Century.

The study examines the role of the Bulgarian lands within the framework of French Levantine trade during the 18th century. Based on both published works and archival sources from the French National Archives, it analyses the export of wool from the Balkan provinces of the Ottoman Empire to France — its organization, dynamics, and significance for bilateral economic relations. The paper traces quantitative data, pricing trends, and competition between French and local merchants, as well as Ottoman policies toward wool export and the role of major trade centers such as Constantinople, Salonica, and Adrianople. The author concludes that wool, rather than cotton, constituted the main Bulgarian export to France in the 18th century and that this trade formed a crucial component of the proto-modern economic development in Bulgarian society.
